Dishwashing has been part of people’s daily lives every now and then. In order to prevent any diseases, you have to ensure that you always clean all your dishes every after meal. The traditional way of dishwashing is cleaning the dishes in the sink with your hands. You have to wash them thoroughly, so you are able to use them again when you eat at home.
Fortunately, a dishwasher was invented to make life easier and more convenient. Thanks to Josephine Garis Cochrane, she invented the first-ever dishwasher in 1887 in Shelbyville, Illinois. She wanted a machine to protect her china from breaking while being washed by her servants. With this, she thought of inventing her own dishwasher. It wasn’t easy at first, but with her determination, she was able to create something very useful for everyone. The whole process is tough yet she gave her best to build this appliance from scratch that made a huge impact in household chores.
The invention of the first dishwasher
When Josephine’s in the process of inventing her machine, she first measured the dishes and then made wire compartments to fit saucers, plates, and cups. All compartments were put inside a flat wheel within a copper boiler. A motor then turned the wheel while squirting hot soapy water from the base of the boiler on the dishes. Good thing, her invention was successful and it actually worked.
Unveiling of the first dishwasher
It was in 1893 during the Chicago World’s Fair that Josephine’s invention was unveiled. Unfortunately, not everyone is interested in it, but a few restaurants and hotels were. In fact, her target market were the housewives, however they didn’t want to invest on something they don’t really need. This didn’t stop Josephine from showing off her invention and proving to people that it is worth it. Luckily, this fair led her to more customers and eventually building her own factory to manufacture dishwashers. More so, her company is now owned by KitchenAid® or popularly known as Whirlpool Corporation following Josephine’s death in 1912. She’s considered as the founder of the company and her patent and trademarks were registered to this company, too.
